The practitioners who will extract the most value from AI development tools are not the ones who can prompt the most cleverly. They're the ones who can think through a business problem with enough rigor, nuance, and structured clarity that the output has a real chance of mattering.
That means understanding the pivot points in a process. The decision gates. The edge cases that aren't really edge cases at all — they're the moments that define the entire operation, they just look rare from the outside.
It means being able to articulate not just what a system should do, but why — what business logic underlies each behavior, what exceptions exist and why they exist, what the downstream consequences of each design choice will be.
That's not a Tuesday afternoon skill. That's the whole game.
A Word for the Vibe Coders
I want to address a phrase that has become somewhat popular in the AI development community: "vibe coding." It refers, more or less, to the practice of building software iteratively with AI tools, guided by intuition and momentum rather than rigorous upfront design.
I understand the appeal. There's something genuinely liberating about being able to build without the traditional gatekeeping of technical skill. I've felt it myself. And I don't want to dismiss it entirely — there are contexts where fast, exploratory iteration is exactly the right approach.
But there's a version of vibe coding that carries a meaningful risk, and it's worth naming directly: building without the ability to deeply articulate the why behind what you're building.
If you can describe a feature but not the business logic that should govern it, you're outsourcing your thinking to a system that can only reflect back what you give it. If you can sketch a workflow but not interrogate whether that workflow actually represents how the work gets done, you're encoding assumptions into your product that will compound over time.
The building part has been democratized. That's genuinely exciting. But democratizing the building without elevating the thinking that precedes it doesn't produce better software. It produces more software that doesn't quite fit — faster.
The organizations and practitioners who will thrive in this environment are the ones who treat the investment in understanding process as seriously as they once treated the investment in building technology. Who recognize that the specification isn't a formality — it is the product. Who understand that the real differentiator isn't what you can build, but what you understand well enough to build correctly.

Defending a dissertation requires understanding the subject matter at a level that survives scrutiny.
The distance between those two things has never been more visible.
What Organizations Should Do With This
If you lead an organization, here is the strategic implication in practical terms:
The question is no longer "Can we afford to build custom software?" The economics have shifted enough that this is increasingly accessible to organizations that would never have considered it before.
The question is now: "Do we understand our own processes well enough to translate them into software that actually reflects how we work?"
That question should make you uncomfortable if you haven't asked it recently. Because most organizations haven't done a serious operational audit in years. Most have accumulated layers of workarounds, informal processes, and undocumented tribal knowledge that live in the heads of a few key people and nowhere else.
That institutional knowledge is your most valuable asset right now. Not because it always will be — processes evolve, markets shift, organizational needs change — but because it is the input that determines the quality of everything AI can help you build in the current moment.
Invest in surfacing it. Document it. Challenge it. Map the decision logic. Identify the pivot points. Name the exceptions and understand why they exist.
Build the brief before you build the product.

Digital transformation was never supposed to be about the technology. It was always supposed to be about the work — about finding better ways to deliver value, serve customers, and operate with clarity and intention.
The technology was a means. The process was always the point.
We are living through a moment when that truth is being made undeniable. AI has removed enough of the friction from the building side that the only remaining question is whether organizations have the self-knowledge to direct it well.
The ones that do will build remarkable things. Things that fit. Things that compound. Things that reflect a genuine understanding of how value gets created in their specific context.
The ones that don't will build quickly, and expensively, and in circles.
The most valuable thing an organization possesses in 2026 is not its tech stack. It's not its vendor contracts. It's not even its data, in isolation.

That's the moat.
